Planning Department- Set Up and Clean Up Plans

Set Up Plan

Terminal City will begin set up on Wednesday, pre-opening.  Equipment will be carried in by members.

It is likely that an early (pre Saturday) crew will arrive Weds to begin flagging and measuring the village, and to assist with our allied  Terminal City camps and their layouts, as well as the layout for the Terminal City Complex -- after placers have confirmed location of course.

The camp is renting a porta-john unit in Sparks, and is anticipated to be hauled in by a camp member on the first Saturday.    The unit is planned to go into the shared common space and will have pumper access (see maps).

Main structures will be set up on Saturday, with detailing on Sunday.

No significant ground disturbance is anticipated- apart from heavy rebar staking...  no pits.  Minor ditching for safty of electric lines anticipated.

A large evaporation pond will handle all grey water and shower run off needs, with appropriate piping!

The antenna for WTF 99.9 Radio APOKILIPTIKA is likely to be shorter than in years past, and anchoring simpler.

No heavy equipment will be used.

No other significant set up issues are anticipated for this village.

Clean Up Plan

Our commitment to Leave No Trace – written by Quick & Deadly

Each year, our village designates a MOOP Czar to coordinate and bear the responsibility of ensuring our campsite is cleaner than we found it. This MOOP Czar is the last person at our campsite and the authority for managing MOOP work crews throughout the event. Every member of our camp is informed of our plans to leave no trace and each camper makes a commitment to work together to minimize any impact to the playa.

To minimize our impact on the Playa, we will follow these rules:

Before the event

·         We pledge to Leave No Trace in and around our campsite, including our own and others’ waste.

·         We will read the survival guide and LNT tips.

·         We will complete this camp’s Leave No Trace Plan and share it with the entire camp.

·         We will plan the assembly and takedown of our structures and decorations and tape the edges of our carpets

·         We will inventory vehicle space so we can pack out everything

·         We will take the packaging off of just about everything and stock up on reusable products and containers

·         We will shop for simple finger foods and prepare meals in advance to reduce waste

·         We will bring no glass, cheap trinkets, small feathers, and anything that might get left on the playa

During the event

·         We will check our camp daily

·         We will clean as we go, realizing that any trash or MOOP can blow away or be buried at any moment.

·         We will keep our recyclables, burnables, and non-burnables clearly separated for easy disposal,

·         We will recycle our aluminum, either on-site or back home

·         We will have special cleanup crews for any high traffic activities we host and take care of any trash left by guests, invited or otherwise.

·         We will not leave trash in or around the port-o-potties

·         We will not light fires on bare ground or dig pits, leaving scars. If we must burn, we’ll use a public burn barrel or burn platform

·         We will burn only clean untreated wood or paper (nothing synthetic) and follow the safety guidelines for fires and burn scar prevention.

·         We won’t dig large holes or trenches

·         We will keep all items tied or weighted down, and leave papers at home.

·         We will not dump any grey or black water on the playa

·         We will encourage members of our camp to carry a personal trash (MOOP) container and a cigarette butt container when they are outside camp.

After the event

·         We will put aside time and have designated volunteers for the final cleanup

·         We will take all trash in sealed containers to a landfill and recyclables to a recycle center on the way home. NO TRASH will be left in Gerlach or Empire!

·         After cleaning our camp, everyone in our camp will devote at least two hours to the general city cleanup (e.g. trash fence, local port-o-potties, café, etc).

·         We will leave extra space in every vehicle on the way to the desert, knowing that repacking will inevitably take up more space and ensure that no items can detach during the ride home.

·         We will pack out everything, including any unevaporated gray water and scum

·         We won’t put trash in or around the port-o-potties

·         We will help out our neighbors and fellow citizens

We will be Good Neighbors

·         We will encourage our guests to bring their own beverage containers.

·         We will help out our neighbors

·         We will adopt the space around our camp, making sure that  it stays traceless

·         We will help careless or forgetful campers

Here's how we’ll do it

Design our camp in a way that is easy to keep clean: Our camp layout and common spaces cater to grouping together in specific areas. This reduces disruption of the playa surface and helps localize personal belongings, trash and MOOP. Additionally, a significant portion of our camp is fenced off, which helps corral any blowing MOOP.

Select materials and decorations for our camp that lessen waste and are recyclable or reusable: Our infrastructure is reused every year with the exception of the wooden fencing materials, which are burned at the end of the week (see Nature and scale of our activities).

Create a detailed plan for the breakdown/cleanup of our camp, accounting for every board, stake, and scrap, and pack necessary tools and supplies: Each individual in camp is responsible for the breakdown of their personal structures and collection of their belongings. All camp members are responsible for disassembly of the common structures (community shade structures, showers, evaporation ponds, fences, streetlights and poles, etc.). Every individual will put in time during the week to do at least 30 minutes of MOOP sweeping in camp and along A Street between 3-3:30 per day. Additionally, 2 hours of community cleanup must be performed by each individual before exodus. This will be enforced by the Camp Mayor or approved stand in.

Plan for extra cleanup and trash generated by activities and parties at our camp: Garbage and recycling receptacles will be placed in the common areas. One individual will head the ‘waste management committee’ (WMC) for the duration of the event. Responsibilities include making sure that garbage (burnable and non-burnable), compost and recycle do not get commingled, the responsibility of changing garbage bags when any receptacle is full, organizing MOOP sweeps and drafting help from campmates to accomplish these tasks. It is the responsibility of ALL camp mates to help with WMC whenever asked and to take initiative to help without being asked.

Have a plan for proper evaporation or disposal of our grey water, including containers to haul out what’s left: Evaporation ponds are the first structure to be set up and the last to be dismantled. Our camp possesses evap ponds. Sealing 5-gallon buckets will be brought to collect the dregs of greywater and bring it home for proper disposal.

Plan enough space and storage in our vehicles for trash hauling: All camp members will reserve space in their vehicles for transporting refuse home. No individual will bear more or less than his or her share of refuse. This will be enforced by the Camp Mayor or approved stand in.

Explain the ground rules to all camp members and post our LNT plan on our website. All members of our camp are debriefed on LNT plan, social protocol, camp responsibilities, etc. at the group meeting prior to departure for the playa. Copies of the LNT Plan will be given to each camp member.

Plan a secured trash separation station with signage and tags and plenty of heavy-duty garbage bags. Waste management committee will be responsible for drafting assistance from the camp member pool to collect, separate, dispose of (burnables), and corral refuse. Full garbage and recycle bags will be stored in a corral and divided among camp members before exodus. No individual will bear more or less than his or her share of refuse.
